Lady & Tramp

Wash your car! Wash your Dog

On Saturday, July 12, 2008, the volunteer dog walkers at LCHS held a charity car wash, dog wash and BBQ. There was a steady stream of dirty cars all day, as well as a few dirty dogs! Our volunteers took advantage of any lull in the dog washing area by treating some of our adoption dogs to a shampoo and some extra TLC.

With help from a large group of volunteers and the support of our community, a total of $2,400.00!! was raised during the event.

So a huge "Thank You!" to the following people and local businesses that made the day such a huge success:

Stangl’s Enviro Lawn Care for running the BBQ.

Cat and Jack Dog Training and K9 Safety for pitching in with the washing and helping those with dog training issues.

McDonald’s (Fourth Avenue) for supplying orange drink.

Starbucks for supplying coffee.

Canadian Tire (Fourth Avenue) for car wash kits.

Sicard's Holiday Campers for car wash soap.

And especially all our dedicated dog walkers and their families and friends!

Michael and Tammy Bell pleaded guilty to Cruelty to Animals for starving their 2 dogs. Michael was given a suspended sentence and Tammy was given a conditional discharge. Both have been placed on probation for three years during which time they must attend counselling and are banned from owning any animals. After the completion of their probation they will be banned from owning any animal for an additional 2 years. (For a total ban of 5 years.)

The Humane Society also has the right, upon reasonable notice, to inspect their premises to confirm they are not housing any animals.

Lincoln County Humane Society Executive Director, Kevin Strooband commented “It’s good that they accepted responsibility for their actions and it is important for animals in general that they won’t be able to own an animal for five years”. A request for restitution for the Humane Society in the amount of $1,559.32 was denied by the court.

Tramp has been renamed by his owner to "Trooper". He has hit his optimal weight of 66 pounds, twice what he weighed when he first arrived at the shelter.

Previously
After completing their investigation, the LCHS has laid 17 criminal charges relating to Lady & Tramp.

The LCHS has charged two St. Catharines' residents, Michael Bell (32 yrs. old) and Tammy Bell (33 yrs. old) with cruelty to animals; namely 2 counts each for failing to provide care, 2 counts each for failing to provide food, 2 counts each for failure to provide water and 2 counts each for causing unnecessary suffering. Charges were laid for each dog. In addition, Michael Bell faces a charge of public mischief for causing a peace officer to enter into an investigation.

On September 25th, 2007, Michael Bell turned over the two dogs to the LCHS and identified them as strays, suggesting they were found running at large in west St. Catharines.

Michael and Tammy Bell are scheduled to attend the Superior Court of Justice in St. Catharines on November 17th, 2007, to answer to the charges.

The LCHS is advising members of the public who have been in contact with Lady and Tramp to consult their family doctor due to the fact that the dogs have been diagnosed with, and treated for, hookworms. This is an intestinal parasite that can be transmitted to humans.

A "Lady & Tramp Fund" has been established, to care for other animals that arrive at the shelter in similar predicaments.

Lady & Tramp have both been adopted and are thriving in their new homes.

Bailey recently celebrated her 13th birthday and asked her friends and family for donations to the Humane Society instead of presents.

Bailey came to the shelter with her mom Tracey and little sister Brittany on March 20 with bags of gifts for the animals and a gift card worth over $350!!

Thank you very much Bailey – you are truly a friend to the animals!

Recently the Canadian Red Cross donated cat and dog food, cat litter, toys and towels to LCHS.

The presentation was made to Kevin Strooband by Patricia Marshall (in front of Kevin) and Rose Little. Also assisting but not present, was Tim Robbins.

A special thanks to the Canadian Red Cross and Kelly Yanyk and her team for this generous donation.

Margo, Melanie & Kevin Strooband

Margo recently celebrated her 8th birthday. When she sent out the invitations to her party she asked her friends and family NOT to buy her presents.

Instead she asked them to buy food and toys for all the animals at the shelter. Judging from the laundry baskets filled with gifts, she didn’t have a hard time convincing them to help out. Also pictured with Margo is Kevin Strooband and her sister Melanie.

“Happy Birthday, Margo” from all of the staff and animals at Lincoln County Humane Society. Thank you for your kindness in turning your special day into a special day for the animals.

Zachary & Kevin Strooband

Zachary (pictured with Kevin Strooband) recently celebrated his 8th birthday on September 24th. Rather than birthday presents, he asked his family and friends to donate to the Lincoln County Humane Society. The animals wish you a “Happy 8th Birthday, Zachary!” and thank you for your kindness.”

A huge "THANK YOU!" to Alex and Taylor. The industrious pair made multi-coloured, braided necklaces, bracelets and key chains and sold them to family and friends. They collected a total of $102!! The girls then went on a shopping spree and purchased many pet-related items that they donated to all of the animals in our care. Well done and thank you girls for being such good friends to the animals.

Hyla & Kevin Strooband

During the summer, Hyla ran a lemonade stand in front of her house. She had lots of friends helping her to raise funds for Lincoln County Humane Society. Thank you, Hyla for your initiative and hard work during the “dog days” summer. The funds you collected will be put to good use helping the animals.

Diane Oroki, Hobbs, and Christine Twardasky

Sat, Nov 3rd

On their own initiative, Christine Twardasky , Diane Obroki and Hobbs (Diane’s dog, a l7-yr-old lab/shepherd/pointer) collected donations for our shelter.

They not only raised $310 in cash donations, but they accepted a huge collection of pet food from the shoppers.

Thank you to Foodland Thorold for discounting the items in the pre-packaged bags, for making the space available and for making it so easy for their shoppers to take part in the fundraiser.

Thank you ladies for organizing the event and giving up most of your Saturday to accept donations. A special thank you to Hobbs who drew a lot of animal lovers to the table and then easily convinced them to participate. Well done, Hobbs!
