Our Volunteer Program

We have a dedicated group of volunteers assisting us in our daily operations but we are always ready to welcome more individuals into our programs.

Volunteers Needed for Pet Visits in the Community

Are you pleasant, dependable, love working with animals and enjoy talking with people of all ages? Then you may be interested in representing LCHS by visiting schools and/or senior facilities in our service areas of St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lincoln and/or Grimsby. These visits are typically scheduled Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. although we would work out a schedule that suits you. You may wish to commit to one visit per week or several.

Our most recent mascot and experienced visitor, Nola, would be accompanying you. Training would be provided. A vehicle is required and you would be reimbursed for mileage.

If you are interested in this volunteer position, please contact Kevin Strooband and indicate any qualities or experience you might have that would be relevant to this position.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at our shelter, we have several ways for you to be involved:

  1. If you are at least 15 years old, you might consider becoming an indoor volunteer. You can be involved in cleaning cages and feeding our animals. This is a great opportunity for high school students to complete their community hours. We will also accept applications for co-op education placements.
  2. If you are at least 21 years old, you might consider becoming a volunteer dog-walker. Dogs that are awaiting adoption enjoy being walked and having play time in our enclosed yard. We would love for each dog to be out in the fresh air 3 times a day, 7 days a week. As you might imagine, this requires a large team of dedicated volunteers.
  3. You might be interested in providing foster care, in your own home. Some of the animals that arrive at our shelter are not ready to be adopted into new homes just yet. They may be injured, ill, too young, too small, non-socialized, pregnant, orphaned or not housebroken. To keep these animals at the shelter to rehabilitate them is not always in their best interest. That's where a foster care volunteer comes in.
  4. If you are at least 16 years old, or if you are younger and have a parent or guardian willing to volunteer with you, you might be interested in our newest program. You can become a cat socialization volunteer. Our cats need and crave human attention. Any amount of time you can spend with them is greatly appreciated. Socialization helps to improve the chances of a cat finding a home, as well giving a feline some well-deserved playtime. You are welcome to spend as much, or as little, time as you like with any cat from our adoption room.

I'm interested! What do I do now?

The first step in the process of becoming a volunteer is to complete our
"Volunteer Application" or "Foster Care Application".

Applications may be mailed, faxed or hand-delivered to our shelter.
